Allotment Materials - An Online Talk With Alice Fox - 8th October

£16.00

8th October 4-6pm BST 2024

Sustainability is at the heart of Alice’s practice. The desire to take an ethical approach has driven a shift from using conventional art and textile materials into exploring found objects, gathered materials and natural processes. The work that Alice makes is process led. She gathers the materials that are available to her, testing, sampling and exploring them to find possibilities using her textiles-based skill set and techniques borrowed from soft basketry. Alice makes sculptural works, bringing different materials together to form tactile surfaces and structures.

In this talk Alice will tell us about the various plant fibres she works with, which are sourced from her allotment. Describing the stages from seed or seedling, through to harvest, processing and storage, Alice will take us on a seasonal journey with various fibres, including cultivated and wild plants. She will show examples of how those fibres are then used in the surfaces and structures she creates for gallery exhibition.

Following a first career in nature conservation, Alice studied Contemporary Surface Design and Textiles followed by an MA in Creative Practice. She works from her home studio and allotment in West Yorkshire, exhibiting and teaching nationally and internationally. She is currently writing her third title for publication by Batsford and has a number of self-published titles.

A recording of the live session will be available to those who sign up for three months after the event.
