Lake Pigment Making - Natalie Stopka - Class Recording

£35.00

Watch to the recording of a two hour live class that took place 17th April and access the PDF resources.

Lake pigments are made from natural dyes, and are a great way to use every drop of colour by converting it to a shelf-stable powder. These pigments can be concocted in varying hue, value and translucency, useful for making a wide array of natural artist’s materials. Their brilliant shades represent the marriage of natural dyes and pigments, extending the palette of earth pigments into the vibrant range of botanical and insect colorants.

Natalie will share a lecture and demonstration of dye extraction and laking, with recipes inspired by historical examples. Participants will learn the chemistry controlling vibrancy and opacity, and receive instructions for extrapolating our basic recipe to any dye plant.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be introduced to colour as a physical material and evolving technology with a deep history. The ingredients and chemical reaction which produce lake pigments will be detailed, along with a basic recipe and instructions for extrapolating that recipe to various dye sources. Students will leave with the chemical understanding, confidence, and health + safety awareness to undertake laking on their own. They will be able to control the hue, saturation, and opacity of the lake pigments they create by adjusting the recipe for their desired application.

Resources:

The recording will be available to stream until the 30th September. You will sent a PDF with the video link, recipes, recommended reading, and a list of vendors in the US + UK

Discount Code:
